Maison Margiela Tabi Boots

A master of deconstructing fashion history, Martin Margiela and his eponymous Maison first introduced the iconic Tabi boots in 1988, shortly after officially establishing the label. Inspired by the traditional Japanese worker shoe, the Margiela Tabis had red paint under them, leaving hooved footprints on the runway cloth, which was subsequently used for Margiela's next collection.

At that point, the heeled Tabi Boots already made a lasting impression and their status has only increased in the decades since. Margiela has made countless variations of the Tabi boots, from classic black leather to vintage painted pairs and bright-colored ones. In addition to the boots, the Tabi toes have transitioned to low-profile shoes for both men and women.
